Van Bramer backs Cruz’s Assembly bid
Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside) is throwing his support behind challenger Catalina Cruz in her race against incumbent Assemblywoman Ari Espinal (D-Jackson Heights).
Van Bramer announced his endorsement alongside Cruz in a press conference last Friday, saying she is “leading a people-powered movement for progressive values.”
“She is a DREAMer who will be a powerful voice for immigrants and the undocumented in Albany at a time when our state desperately needs leaders,” Van Bramer said, referring to Cruz’s former status as an undocumented immigrant brought to the United States as a child. “She is experienced, forceful, and determined.”
“The people of our community want a new direction and want a real choice in electing their representation,” Cruz added. “Like Van Bramer’s own insurgent campaign in 2009, we will engage the community with a plan of action that speaks to the needs of the people.”
Joining Van Bramer in supporting Cruz this week was Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal (D-Manhattan), who announced her endorsement on Monday.
Other notable lawmakers to back Cruz include Councilman Danny Dromm (D-Jackson Heights), former City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.).
