Our campaign has developed a plan to protect reproductive rights, improve women’s health care and give women a level playing field in the workplace
In 2018, women continue to demand equal rights — the right to basic health care, to live free of sexual assault and harassment, to live free of discrimination, and to make her own life choices and pursue her dreams. We are not the first generation to demand these rights, and we are more determined than ever. We are showing our determination on the streets, with our vote, and by running for office in unprecedented numbers. That is why our campaign has developed a plan to protect reproductive rights, improve women’s health care and give women a level playing field in the workplace. We propose to:
Decriminalize abortion: Under NYS law, criminal charges can be brought against women who have abortions and the health care professionals who provide them. In order to protect a woman’s right to choose, we must once and for all pass the Reproductive Health Act to codify Roe v. Wade and ensure that abortion is no longer criminalized.
Secure contraception coverage: 33% of the wage gains women have made since the 1960s are the result of access to oral contraceptives. I will push to pass the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act for cost-free contraception, education, and counseling, and ensure that we can truly achieve socio-economic equality for women in our community.
Require comprehensive sex education: New York does not have standards to teach comprehensive sex education. Comprehensive sex-ed should be required for all students in our state and New York should be the leader in the creation of a plan to teach comprehensive sex education.
Establish clear policy on sexual harassment and assault: Elected lawmakers need to lead by example. We need to finally establish a clear process for handling sexual harassment and assault allegations. Victims deserve an independent, expeditious investigation. Perpetrators must be held accountable.
Level the playing field for women our society: Adopt a comprehensive approach that includes passing the Dream Act so that immigrant women can pursue their studies, expanding NYC’s salary history ban statewide, banning revenge porn often used to victimize women, and prioritizing childcare and pre-K funding, among other initiatives.
